Have you ever been away from home with a misbehaving child and you said, 'Whatever is the matter with you? Don't you know any better than that? Don't you know where you are?' Paul was talking just like that to the Corinthians, 'Don't you understand your position? Are you failing to understand the function of the church and the work of the Holy Spirit? Have you forgotten what it is all about?' The Word of God emphasises that what we learn in doctrine or theory must be worked out in our lives by the Holy Spirit. Paul also refers to the temple of God. It is quite true that the Holy Spirit dwells in the church, but he also lives in the heart of every believer. Look carefully at 6:19. There is no stronger motive for personal holiness than this great truth that the Holy Spirit of God is living in our hearts. He is the Spirit of Holiness and he will make our lives holy if we will let him. We could never do it ourselves, although some people have tried. They have shut themselves off from the rest of the world and tried to make themselves holy. If they failed to recognise the Holy Spirit, however, they would never succeed as they would be acting in the power of the flesh and nothing more. The Holy Spirit has come to make real to us all that Jesus Christ has made possible. When we yield ourselves day by day to him, he works in our hearts and lives, making us more and more like Jesus Christ. And Christ, of course, is God's standard of holiness. Never forget the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life as a believer. Let him do his work in you and you will find how wonderful it can prove in holy living. A PRAYER: Lord Jesus let your Holy Spirit work in me today. |
