HOSPITAL VISITORS
Day 25

Bible Reading:   Job 2: 11-13
How often do you visit a friend or relative in a hospital room? What did you say? Did you find it difficult to make conversation, especially if the patient was very seriously ill? What did you say to the family? It is not easy to say the "right thing", is it?

But give these men credit where credit is due. They came when Job's need was greatest. They sat with him where he was on the ash heap. In that sense they identified with Job in his terrible physical and emotional state. Job's appearance must have been repulsive, but they stayed with him. They were there, which is perhaps the greatest possible expression of friendship when someone is really hurting.

Unfortunately they finally broke their silence. It is obvious that they all knew God. We could say they knew the same God Job knew, but their ideas about God and how He works were both right and wrong, actually more wrong than right.

They gave him the kind of advice this world may offer, but they overlooked the nature of God. All God's plans for us are made because of His love. Jeremiah said it well, "I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

What did the men say? Overall their emphasis was on the character of Job, more than anything else. John Stott said, "They told him not to look at himself and his suffering but to look at himself and his sin." All three accuse him again and again of his sin and even the sins of his children.

But in that they were all wrong. God may discipline us but He will never punish believers for their sin. Remember Christ bore our sin in His own body on the cross. The price has been paid. Whatever God allows now, is only to help us grow in grace and the likeness of Christ. Please read Romans 8:28-29 and thank God for those re-assuring comforting words.

"I GIVE YOU THIS CHARGE…"
Day 20

Bible Reading:   2 Timothy 4: 1-8
How many times have these verses been used in an induction or ordination service? They sound so familiar to us but they still contain one of the strongest challenges ever given to a Christian minister.

They could be given however to any Christian worker.

A minister "wears many different hats". He is a preacher, teacher, manager, counsellor, and sometimes church caretaker. But his first responsibility is to preach the Word - to make sure that whenever God's people meet, he has a word for them from the Lord, based on a portion of Scripture. It is easier to give a nice talk that doesn't bother anyone and sends them away feeling happy. But is that what God wants those people to hear?

Paul warned about this in verse 5. The time is coming - in the last days (are they where we are right now?) that people will want preachers who will tell them what they want to hear, but again it may not be the word of God.

Paul recognises it may not be easy. He tells Timothy and us too, to do it with great patience and careful instruction. He adds that we need to give a word of encouragement along with the plain teaching of the truth. Many who come to our services need that. They may have had a hard week, they may be facing serious problems themselves or in their families. Let them find in the preaching of the word of God a promise which will encourage them to face the days ahead and to leave their problems with the Lord.

"Do the work of an evangelist." In other words, don't be afraid to preach the whole Gospel. Men and women need to be faced with their sins and their need of Christ. All of the above may not fit into every message, but in the course of a ministry not one of these parts can be omitted. Paul adds, "Fully perform all the duties of your ministry."

Now the old warrior takes a look at what was ahead - his martyrdom for Christ. He could look back without regret; he could look ahead without fear. A departure from this life meant arriving in Heaven and a loving welcome from Christ Himself. What more could any believer ever want? Lord helps us to be faithful to the end.

THE HOLY SCRIPTURES.
Day 19

Bible Reading:   2 Timothy 3: 1 0-17
There is a marked contrast between the first nine verses of this chapter and our reading today. Those previous verses show the results in the lives of those who have turned away from God. Paul warns that this will only become worse and worse in the last days before Christ returns.

But Paul recognises that Timothy's life and ministry were very different. He had grown up in a Christian home and had early learned the way of life. That in itself is a tremendous advantage. It is tragic today that so few young people have had that privilege. Our Sunday Schools and youth work are still among the most important activities in any church.

Paul stresses the nature of what he calls the Holy Scriptures. He plainly states that they came from God (v.16) through men of God. The word inspired really means "God-breathed". We may not know exactly how God energized the writers but the Holy Spirit superintended their writing so that what was written was God's word. This did not do away with their personality. It was not dictation. It was the Spirit moving them to write God's message. Look at 2 Peter 1:21 for another way to describe this inspiration.

Four ways are mentioned here in which the Scriptures are invaluable. They are for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness. Teaching reminds us that this is the book from which we learn our doctrine. Many cults put their own textbook alongside the Bible. One test of a cult is what place it gives to the Word of God?

Then it is the book the Holy Spirit uses to rebuke us when we sin. The Psalmist asked the simple question: "How can a young man (or anyone) keep his way pure? By living according to your word." The Holy Spirit uses the word of God to convict us of sin. Again it is clear we need to spend time reading and studying the Word itself.

For correction - the Scriptures not only convict but they show us how to live and what to believe. When heresy arises, the Word of God will show us the real truth. We need training in the things of God - the Word is there to do that for us also. What a wonderful, powerful book - the gift of God to meet our needs as we live the Christian life.

THE LORD'S SERVANT
Day 18

Bible Reading:   2 Timothy 2: 14-25
Several well known verses are in this passage of Scripture. Verse 15 has been a key verse for students through many generations. The KJV words are so familiar, "Study to show thyself approved unto God..." Those words have challenged many believers and can still speak to us today. An urgent need in many churches is more study of God's Word.

Then verse 19 contains the assuring phrase – "The Lord knows those who are His." Those words can be taken in many different ways. They can speak assurance to every believer. They can also bring comfort when a loved one has passed away and we do not know if they ever accepted Christ. God knows if they did at any time and we have to leave it there.

Next Paul returns to his figures of speech seen earlier in the chapter. Now he likens believers to vessels used in a household. The point he makes is that no matter what the vessel is made of, it must always be ready for the master of the household's use. Obviously if God is going to use us, we need to be clean and available for His use. In verse 21 Paul clearly states that it is our responsibility to be cleansed and ready. Those are strong words to us all.

After further varied instructions in verses 22-23, Paul lays down a clear statement on the behaviour of the Lord's servant. How much better off our churches would be if all the members could listen to these words, "The Lord's servant must not quarrel." The word actually means "to make war". Many times churches have been divided; missionary societies and other groups have been splintered simply because one person or group wants to have his or their own way.

It is a beautiful picture Paul gives of the Lord's servant, kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful, gently instructing those who oppose him. Very few of us have ever come up to that standard but that is what Christ was like while here on earth. Why shouldn't His servants be more like Him in every way?

AN OLD MAN'S LAST LETTER
Day 16

Bible Reading:   2 Timothy 1: 1-7
This final letter of Paul's is deeply moving, with its intimate references to Timothy and also in the picture it gives us of Paul himself, lonely and almost alone in a prison in Rome awaiting execution. Those who should have stood with him deserted him (see 4:16).

But it also gives us many tremendous verses, some of which have become well known to all believers. They range from personal assurance to the inspiration of the Scriptures.

Once again Paul's prayer life is seen as he tells Timothy how often he prays for him - see verse 3. Even though in prison he maintained a continuous prayer ministry. It reminds us that even if we may be shut in or unable to do very much for Christ, the ministry of prayer is always open to us.

Timothy's background is also mentioned. What a heritage a Christian mother and grandmother. But Paul is concerned that Timothy will continue serving Christ to the best of his ability and in the light of his God-given gifts. It is so easy to become discouraged when serving in a church. That almost sounds like a contradiction but is sadly true; the way is often hard and lonely. Our encouragement must be in Christ and not in others.

God's gift to every believer is mentioned in verse 7. Without a doubt Paul is referring to the Holy Spirit here. He speaks of a spirit of power that could only be the Holy Spirit who is living in every believer to set us free from fear as well many other ministries. Paul also mentions love and self-discipline. Love is the first mark of the Spirit-filled life, one aspect of the fruit of the Spirit which should be seen in every believer's life.

The last result of the Spirit's indwelling mentioned in this verse can be translated by various terms. The Amplified Version gives four of them - a calm and well-balanced mind, discipline and self-control.

Perhaps stability could sum it all up. A believer's life needs to be stable, consistent with his profession, reflecting the control of the Spirit over his entire personality. That kind of life would certainly glorify Christ.
