THE PRESENT MINISTRY OF CHRIST What three words describe Christ's position and work for us today as our Great High Priest? Those three words are: our Mediator, our Intercessor, and our Advocate. What is the difference between them? A Mediator is literally a 'middle man', a go between. In Jewish marriages there was always a middle man who arranged the marriage on behalf of both families. He was a person whom both sides trusted and who could negotiate on behalf of one or the other. There seems to be a longing in the hearts of people over the world to have someone who could approach, on their behalf, whatever god they trust in. Job, in what may be the oldest written book in the Bible, cried out, 'If only there were someone to arbitrate between us, to lay his hand on both of us.' That would be a mediator. Jesus Christ is the only mediator who can stand between God and man. He fills all of the space between. No one else is needed. No man. No other being. We have unlimited direct access to God through Jesus Christ. He is (and always was) high enough to touch the Father. He became low enough to take your hand and mine and lead us to the Father. It is wonderful to think He will always be the same. Hebrews 7:24 says it so well. 'Because Jesus lives forever He has a permanent priesthood.' Verse 26 also has a great message. 'Such a high priest meets our need.' Thank God for Him again today - our Mediator, our middle man, our go between, between us and God. He said it. 'No one comes to the Father, except through me.' (John 14:6) But thank God anyone can come to the Father through Him. |
