There are only four verses in our reading today, but for believers they are among the most important in all of Christ's words regarding the Holy Spirit. We need to know and clearly understand all that is taught here. What does the Holy Spirit do in the life of a believer? Does he draw attention to himself? No, he loves to give all the attention to the Son, Jesus Christ. What did Christ say? 'He [the Holy Spirit] shall not speak of himself, he shall glorify me [Christ].' What is the test of the work of the Holy Spirit in your heart and mind? It is simply this: How much of the person of Jesus Christ can be seen in my life and yours? How much of the character of Christ can others see in me? The work of the Holy Spirit is to reproduce Christ in us, to develop his life within us and to show the fruit of the Spirit's presence day by day (Gal. 5: 22-25). There are those who tell us that the presence of the Holy Spirit will be seen in unusual ways. For example we will be able to speak in a language other than our own or we will be able to perform miracles of healing today. We are never told to seek these gifts. Rather, we should make every effort to allow the Spirit of God to do the work he came to do - that is to show forth Christ in our lives day by day. To say it again, the proof of the Holy Spirit's work in our lives is this: How much of the character of Christ can others see in us? Here is a prayer we could use each morning: 'Lord Jesus I give myself to you for this day, that the Holy Spirit may have his way in me today. Amen.'
