HOW BIG IS YOUR GOD? Have you ever felt you were the only person in your church doing anything for the Lord? Have you ever been discouraged? Have you ever faced seeming failure? If so, you will identify with Elijah, the prophet to Israel at about 860 B. C. Yet he was the man God used. He was one of the greatest of the non-writing prophets of the Old Testament. He was the one God took to heaven without dying. His experiences with God contain some wonderful lessons for us. Spiritually it was one of the worst periods of Israel's history. Ahab was king with Jezebel as his queen. Their gods were Baal and Ashtoreth. Baal was supposed to be the god of the sun and fire. Ashtoreth was the goddess of love and fertility but her worship had degenerated into orgies of sex and depravity. These were the gods Israel worshipped. In that dark hour there was one man who knew the true God. He knew his God was alive, and what his God wanted. His God was greater than Baal or Ashtoreth. His own name, Elijah, meant "Jehovah is my God". Here was a man willing to be God's messenger. He was willing to stand up and be counted. He knew the reality of God in his own life. He had spent time with his God. He knew his God could answer prayer. Do you believe your God answers prayer? Do you believe your God is sufficient for every situation? Then trust him afresh today, no matter what your circumstances are. Bring God into the situation and leave the outcome with him. Our world is much the same as in Elijah's day. Many today have their own gods - of pleasure, success or possessions. But like Elijah, we are God's representatives. How are we going to convince our world that God is alive? By letting them see what God can do in us and through us! The reality of God in human experience is something the world can neither deny nor duplicate. |
