WHO ARE YOU LOOKING AT? One of the easiest things that a Christian can do is to look at other Christians. We compare ourselves with them and then think that we are either better or worse than they are. But the writer to the Hebrews says straight out that the person we should keep our eyes on is Jesus Christ. The men and women mentioned in chapter 11 are all wonderful people. They all had a great faith in a great God. But they were only human like us and could never be the perfect example that Christ is. How is our Christian life to be lived? The answer here is that it is like running a race. A Christian is not a tourist wandering around looking at everything. A Christian is a pilgrim and a runner headed toward Jesus Christ or it might be better to say, toward being more and more like Christ. This is one of the definite purposes in being a Christian. It is a process which begins here on earth but which is only completed in heaven. Call it a race, call it growth, call it maturing, it will always be the same- the need of moving on daily with Christ. No believer is excused from this God appointed activity. There are weights which will hinder our running. They are not always on the outside because they actually begin in our heart and mind. We often hear it asked 'What is the harm in it?' when really the question ought to be 'Will this thing, this action, this decision help or hinder my Christian life?' Is it something that will help me grow more like Christ or is it something that may come between me and Christ! If we make our decisions in the light of that question, it will help us be more like what we should be for Christ. A THOUGHT FOR TODAY: How far have I gone in the Christian race this week? |
