Chapter 14, 15 and 16 of John are tremendously important and particularly helpful to believers. They contain the last words of Christ to his disciples before his death. They also give us many precious truths. One of these is Christ's promise that there would come into this world another person just like himself. That one would be the Holy Spirit. As you read these chapters, especially chapter 16, you can plainly see that Christ was saying, 'All you will ever need after I am gone will be given to you by the Holy Spirit'. He called him the Spirit of truth, the helper or the comforter. Christ said the Holy Spirit would be the disciples' teacher, he would help them remember the things Christ himself had taught them. This is one explanation of the remarkable way John in particular was able to write down for us so many of the things Christ said, word for word. Christ also said the Holy Spirit would have a ministry to the world, but it would be a convicting work first of all. The Holy Spirit would convince men and women of their sin of unbelief and their need of a Saviour, pointing them to Jesus Christ. This is his work still today. He alone can convict a person of sin. That is one more reason why we need to pray for our unsaved friends and loved ones, asking that the Holy Spirit will speak to their hearts. The Holy Spirit is living in every believer and, according to Christ's promise, he is there to stay for ever. Turn back to John 14: 16-17 and be encouraged today by these two thoughts - the Holy Spirit is just like Christ and he is in your heart to stay with you for ever. A THOUGHT FOR TODAY: The Holy Spirit is the presence of God living in every believer's heart.
