There were some very real problems in the church at Corinth. Some of them arose because of the evil in the city in which the Church was working and worshipping. For example the place of women in Corinth was known to be very sinful in many ways. A large number of women were living in sin in the heathen temples or openly walking the streets in an immoral way. This had affected some of the church women, too. Paul was writing to correct these things. Paul stresses three points. First, the head of the husband is Christ. Then the head of the woman is the man and the head of Christ is God. We need to look at all three of these to get a balanced view of our relationships with one another and with God. How can the head of Christ be God when Christ himself is God? In his deep love for his Father, Christ willingly submitted himself to the will of the Father so that you and I might be saved. So he was able to say, 'I came not to do my own will but the will of him that sent me'. Now Paul says to husbands, 'As Christ submitted himself to the Father, are y u prepared to submit yourselves to Christ?' If so, the wife will be able to look at her husband's loving submission to Christ and see in that an example of what her loving submission to her husband should be. It is not that the husband is the boss of the wife, but as he is guided by Christ, he should be able to decide what is best for his family. Needless to say, a Christian wife will join her husband in seeking to know what that will is. Then together they will seek to carry it out. This is a wonderful picture. Do you think it seems too perfect? Our homes would be a lot happier if Christ was truly the head of the home, guiding and leading in all things. A PRAYER: Lord, may others see in me today the fact that I have submitted to your will as you submitted tQ the Father's. |
