THE GIRL WHO LIVED TWICE
Day 30

Bible Reading:   Mark 5: 21 - 24, 35 - 43
How old was the girl? Just twelve. She was evidently a very sick girl and her father knew she was dying. In a beautiful way, he simply asked Jesus to come and touch her and she would be healed. That was wonderful faith!

There were several delays along the way as Jesus went with Jairus. Suddenly there was a tug at Jairus' sleeve. One of his servants was there to tell him that his daughter had died. What heartbreak that must have meant to Jairus. But Jesus said, 'Don't be afraid, just trust me'.

So they came to the house. When Jesus said the little girl was only asleep, everyone laughed at him. But when a Christian dies it is very much like going to sleep here and awakening immediately on the other side, the looking into the face of our Saviour.

This is not 'soul-sleep' as some teach. It is only the body that is asleep until the resurrection. The soul is alive and conscious and in the presence of Christ.

Our Lord spoke to the girl who was dead. It is interesting that one each of the three occasions that Jesus raised someone from the dead, it was by his voice. The girl stood up and walked immediately. Even the dead have to respond when Jesus calls.

It doesn't make any difference how long a person has been dead in sin. When Jesus speaks, new life comes to them immediately. Today we need more people like Jairus – people who believe in Christ and who are willing to go out of their way to bring Christ to those who need him.

A PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord, make me a channel of blessing today!

WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE GO TO CHURCH?
Day 29

Bible Reading:   Mark 2: 23 - 3: 5
It is interesting to see the kinds of people Christ met when he went to what we would call 'church'. There was the man who was demon possessed. This reading tells of the man with the withered hand and there were many others too. For example, there were those who were critical of Jesus but there were many plain ordinary believers too.

Here is the story of one man in need. What better place for him to be than in a 'church'? Notice several things in the story:

He had to openly confess his need. That isn't always easy is it? But Christ cannot meet our need until we admit we have a need in our hearts. What is your need? Lack of assurance? Lack of prayer? Worldliness? Failure? Tell Christ about it and he will help you?

He had obedient faith. When Christ said to him 'Stretch out your hand, the man was faced with a big question. Who should he obey? He wanted to obey Christ but there were those present of whom he was afraid. Fear of man keeps many people from obeying Christ. What should he do? Thank God he used his courage to help him obey Christ. He started to stretch out his hand and immediately he could feel new life and strength coming into it. The moment he began to obey, that moment the healing process began.

Is there some need in your life that you have tired to keep hidden? Why not let Christ help you today? Tell him about your need, whatever it is and then do what he tells you. You will be amazed at the difference Christ can make in your life as you obey him.

WHEN FOUR MEN BROUGHT THEIR FRIEND TO CHRIST
Day 28

Bible Reading:   Mark 2: 1 – 12
What do you think is the most wonderful part of this story? Do you think it was the healing of the paralysed man or do you think it was the faith of the four men who brought him to Christ?

We would love to know more details about it all. Who suggested this stretcher bearing? When they got to the house, who said, 'Let's go up to the roof'? Where did they find ropes to help them lower the sick man down in front of Christ? What did the friends do afterwards? Was the sick man very grateful for all that they did? Did they put the roof back afterwards?

The faith of the four men certainly spoke to Jesus. He seemed thrilled with the whole situation, rather than being bothered by the interruption. He gladly did two things. First he said that the man's sins were forgiven. Then he told him to get up and walk. The man did so and was healed immediately!

Is there any lesson for us here today? What will it take to bring some of our neighbours and friends to Christ? It may take our active friendship. Just like those four men long ago, our friends may need us to bring them face to face with Jesus Christ. Are we prepared to do it?

Who is there that you are praying for that they might be saved? As their friend, do you need to take one step more and help them find Christ? What bridge of friendship could you build that might begin the process of bringing them to him? Could you ask God today to help you be a true friend to your friends and bring them to Christ? This man's greatest need was spiritual. It is the same for your friends.

A PRAYER:

'Lead me to some soul today

O teach me, Lord, just what to say.'

CHRIST FACES THE POWERS OF DARKNESS
Day 27

Bible Reading:   Mark 1: 14 – 27
Some of the most amazing scenes in Christ's earthly life took place when he came face to face with people held in the grip of Satan. There were many of these occasions. Satan or his demons are referred to 35 times in the gospel of Mark which is the shortest of all four gospel records.

This story happened in what we would call a Sunday morning church service. Here was a demon-controlled man in the very presence of Christ. It is possible today to be controlled by Satan. For example there are many people who are desperately afraid of evil spirits, of darkness and many other things. Behind that fear is Satan. He tries to keep such people from ever coming to know Christ and so be set free from Satan's power.

Notice what the man said, or what the evil spirit in him said (v.24). 'Let us alone.' Isn't this what so many people say today? They want attention. They want to talk about their problem, but when you try to help them, they say 'Leave me alone'. For many reasons, they don't really want to give up the very things that are binding them and making them helpless.

What did Christ do? He ordered the spirit to come out of the man. What a wonderful moment that must have been. A soul was released from the grip of Satan, from the things he used to do, from all his fear and darkness.

The people around saw what Christ was able to do. They saw his authority exercised in a life and could only wonder at what had been done.

Has the world around seen anything of this in your life and mine? Christ is waiting to use us as examples of what he can do. Are we allowing him to do it?

BITTER WATERS
Day 26

Bible Reading:   Exodus 15: 22 – 27
Have you ever been in a place where you became terribly thirsty, because you couldn't find water? Have you ever come across a water hole that contained only bad water? If you have, you can imagine what it was like for the people of Israel after they had crossed the Red Sea. They found water but it was so bitter they could not drink it. What could they do?

This was only three days after God's marvellous deliverance of the people at the Red Sea. Only three days and already they had forgotten what God had done. Instead of saying to each other, 'Remember how God helped us at the Red Sea, he must be able to help us here', they once more complained to Moses. They were like spoiled children who couldn't think of anything else to do.

What did Moses do? Did he blame himself for what had happened? Many leaders do that when things go wrong. Did he turn on the people and scold them? Again many Christian leaders will do that.

No, verse 25 tells us that Moses did what we all should do and what the people themselves should have done. He turned to God and said, 'Lord show me what to do'. God told him and the miraculous result was proof again of God's power and of his care for his people. Later they went on to Elim, where there was enough water for all.

In our spiritual experiences, it may often be like that. There will come bitter times of hardship and testing. But if we ask God for his help, he will gladly give it. He won't leave us there either, but will lead us on into places of blessing which will be like Elim for us.

A VERSE FOR TODAY:

He leads me beside the still waters.

GOD'S POWER OVER THE SEA
Day 25

Bible Reading:   Exodus 14: 10 – 22
The first big test for the Children of Israel came only a few days after they left Egypt. Pharaoh once more had changed his mind and was now chasing them to bring them back. He and his army were behind them while in front was the Red Sea. What could they do? Where could they go?

First, they complained to their human leader, Moses. They should have been crying out to God but instead all they could do was complain.

Moses gave them some wonderful words in reply (v.13). 'Don't be afraid! Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord'. 'The Lord will fight for you while you keep silent' (v.16).

That is exactly what God did. But notice how he did it. The people were on the west bank of the Red Sea, but God began to open up the sea from the east side (see v.21). In other words, the way across was being opened up for them, but it was not until the last minute that it was clear right up to where they were standing. Think this through for yourself.

God often works like that. We think he is doing nothing, yet all the time he is opening up the way ahead. Suddenly it is all clear to us.

Then notice how in verses 19 and 20 the pillar of fire, the symbol of God's presence, moved around to come between the enemy and God's people. God did not allow the Egyptians to move forward until his own people were safe on the other side of the sea.

When our circumstances seem to be against us, let's remember that our God is greater than those circumstances. He can still hold back our enemy, Satan. When we are afraid let us trust in God who is already planning our deliverance.
