Some of the most amazing scenes in Christ's earthly life took place when he came face to face with people held in the grip of Satan. There were many of these occasions. Satan or his demons are referred to 35 times in the gospel of Mark which is the shortest of all four gospel records. This story happened in what we would call a Sunday morning church service. Here was a demon-controlled man in the very presence of Christ. It is possible today to be controlled by Satan. For example there are many people who are desperately afraid of evil spirits, of darkness and many other things. Behind that fear is Satan. He tries to keep such people from ever coming to know Christ and so be set free from Satan's power. Notice what the man said, or what the evil spirit in him said (v.24). 'Let us alone.' Isn't this what so many people say today? They want attention. They want to talk about their problem, but when you try to help them, they say 'Leave me alone'. For many reasons, they don't really want to give up the very things that are binding them and making them helpless. What did Christ do? He ordered the spirit to come out of the man. What a wonderful moment that must have been. A soul was released from the grip of Satan, from the things he used to do, from all his fear and darkness. The people around saw what Christ was able to do. They saw his authority exercised in a life and could only wonder at what had been done. Has the world around seen anything of this in your life and mine? Christ is waiting to use us as examples of what he can do. Are we allowing him to do it? A QUESTION: Can others see Jesus in me? |
