It is always easier to point your finger at someone else rather than at yourself. Verse 15 is an example of this. The LivingBible paraphrases it well, "The remnant left in Jerusalem is saying about the exiles (in Babylon), 'It is because they are so wicked that the Lord has deported them. Now the Lord has given us their land.'" But God knew what they were saying and wanted to encourage those who were in exile. The remnant in Jerusalem would eventually find themselves in the same position of captivity and exile as those they were despising. God added these wonderful words of promise and hope found in verse 16. Even though these people were far away from the temple in Jerusalem, God could be very real to them. It would be a new experience for them. Without the visible material place of worship (the temple) they could still personally know the presence of God. Sometimes it is easy to think that God can only be found in the great cathedrals, but God is in the heart that has put its trust in Him, no matter where we may be. Psalm 46 reminds us that "God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble". Wherever faith exists, God is there and wants to prove to us His presence and His power. Then God makes a further promise in verses 17 -20. In His own time, He will pick up His own people again and return them to their own land. When His purpose has been fulfilled, when the work He wants to do has been accomplished, He will bring His people all the way back. At the same time, God will give them a new heart which will be warm and responsive to God. They will be obedient to Him and have fellowship with Him. What a wonderful future! God still wants the same response from His people today. He longs for our fellowship. Let's make sure we do not disappoint Him, the waiting Father. |
