One of the results of the Holy Spirit being allowed to work in the hearts of a group of believers is a beautiful unity among them. Every Christian should belong to a local church and should be praying that the church will become what Christ intended. Someone has said a Christian is like a bee, a member of a big group which works well together. A spider is the opposite. It always works and spins alone. What did the early church do after so many men and women came to Jesus Christ? One of the first things they needed was NEW TEACHING. Notice verse 42. They had received NEW LIFE, now they needed to learn how to live that life. Our need will always be the same. One of the greatest needs of Christians everywhere is to be taught the Word of God, and to learn to live by it. Is your church teaching the Christians how to live for Christ? It should be. Secondly, in the early church there was NEW FELLOWSHIP. They loved each other and wanted to share with each other. The outside world saw this and it spoke to the unsaved of the wonder and job of belonging to Jesus Christ. What do the unsaved people in your area see in your church? A group of loving sharing Christians or something else? Thirdly, in the early church there was a NEW FEAST, we call it the Lord's supper or communion. In verse 46 it seems they also had some ordinary meals together but in verse 42 it speaks of the new feast Christ had told them to have. In this way they were to remember his death. The church is to keep on doing this until Jesus Christ comes back again. Whenever your church meets together for the Lord's supper, remember you are openly saying, 'I believe Jesus Christ died for me. I believe he gave his body and his life blood for me and I want everyone to see this is what I believe.' We all need teaching. We all need to learn how to live for Christ and with one another. And we always need to remember it was Christ's death and resurrection that made the church possible. |
