This well-known story was one of the final miracles Christ performed before his own death on the cross. It was also one of his greatest. He raised a man's body to life when he had been dead four days. No one else has ever been about to do this. Here too are some of Christ's greatest words. Read verses 25 and 26. We often think we need a crowd of people when we want to say something we think is important. Jesus said these tremendous words to one person. There are three miracles in the gospels where Christ raised someone from the dead. There was the widow of Nain's son. There was the daughter of Jairus and there was Lazarus. Christ gave life to them all. He still gives spiritual life to those who trust in him, no matter how old or how young they may be. Why did Jesus weep? (v.35). Was it because he saw what death had done to the family he loved? Did he realise as he went toward the grave that here was an example of all that sin had brought into the world? Did he see again how terrible sin and death are. Did he weep because of all this? All three persons whom Jesus raised from the dead, heard his voice and came back to life. When Jesus comes again, it will be the same. 'The Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout and the voice of the archangel.' In another place it says, 'all that are in the grave shall hear his voice' (John 5:28). When Jesus says 'Come forth' the bodies of all those who have died trusting in him, will come out of the graves as resurrection bodies. Their souls will join their bodies and be with Christ for all eternity. Can Christ do it? He proved he could, both by the raising of these three and by his own resurrection. What a wonderful hope we have in Christ. A new body, a new home and that is in addition to all we have here now. Have you thanked him for all these things today? |
