We begin today a short series of readings in the book of Leviticus-a book about Jesus Christ. It is the third book of the Old Testament but it speaks of Christ. Today we can look back and see him so clearly in the tabernacle, the offerings and the priesthood. Leviticus may not be an easy book to study but remember gold is not always found on the surface of the earth. Very often it has to be mined by tremendous effort and cost. It could be that by digging deep into this book we may discover rich blessings we would otherwise miss. Leviticus is referred to over 40 times in the New Testament. Primarily of course it was the handbook of the priest. The name 'Leviticus' means the things which had to do with the Levites, the priestly tribe. God gave very clear instructions about the worship in the tabernacle and later, of course, the Temple. How were the offerings to be made? How were the priests to act? How were the people to live day by day? All these questions are answered in the book of Leviticus and every answer speaks of Christ. Nothing was left to man's imagination, it all came by revelation from God. The first part of the book explains Israel's approach to God. The second part tells how the people of Israel were to live, having been accepted by God. Every time an Israelite pushed forward an unblemished I animal to be slain for his sin, he was recognizing the need for an innocent offering to be offered to God and the need for blood to be shed to take -away his sin. Christ was the only perfect sacrifice. He put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. Jesus Christ is also seen as the great High Priest. It is a tremendous encouragement to know that Jesus Christ is our High Priest now in heaven above. He constantly intercedes for us before the throne of God. |
