This is another of the great pictures Isaiah has given us of Jesus Christ. In chapter 7 he speaks about Immanuel-God with us. In chapter 9 he gives us some of the names of Christ as well as the promise of his birth. In these verses he tells us about Christ, the king of righteousness. There are only five verses in our reading but they are wonderfully full of thoughts concerning Christ, his coming, his ministry, his power and his character. The first verse mentions a small green shoot coming from what had been a dead stump. It would be very small to begin with but would keep on growing. Christ's coming into this world was a very humble beginning for the Son of God. He was born into a poor family at a time when David's race was possibly at its lowest level. This was all part of the love of Christ in setting aside his own glory and power and coming into this world to serve and to die in God's will. He ministered through the power of the Spirit of God (v. 2, 3). The Spirit of God rested on him in a remarkable way. The Father was with him and the whole of the Godhead was there when Christ walked this earth. Read verse 2 again. Notice all the ways in which the Spirit of God is described. The same Holy Spirit is with us today and can supply for God's children those same wonderful gifts. Do you need wisdom? The Spirit has that for you. Do you need advice and strength? The Holy Spirit is waiting to give them to you. Count on him for these things. Ask him to make them real in your life. He is still the same as in Christ's day. He still waits to help each of us in all the circumstances of our lives. Notice verse 3 also. See what the result of the Spirit's work in our hearts will be. It will mean a new appreciation of people and circumstances. It will mean greater love for others and greater respect for all of God's children. The work of the Spirit will reach into every part of our lives as we allow him to do the work he came to do. A PRAYER: Blessed Holy Spirit live through me today, I would be like Jesus pure in every way. |
