What is the place of the believer in the world of today? Christ made it very plain. He had told his hearers what kind of people his followers ought to be. Then he told them what their work would be in this world. Christ said plainly that they (and we) are like salt and light. Salt has a strong but unseen influence. Light is a visible benefit to all. These are only two of the 49 or more objects which Christ mentioned in his Sermon on the Mount. Salt helps to prevent decay in food. If God sees Christians as salt, then the world around us must be decaying. This is because of sin. What then should we be doing? Let's take Christ's word and follow it through. Salt is of no use while it is kept in a jar or in a salt shaker. It must be put into contact with the food, meat or vegetables or whatever, to do its work. As 'salt I will have to be in contact with the sinful, decaying, dying world if I am to help it. That means I can't always stay in the company of Christians. I need to get out and witness for Christ. To use the other word Christ used, I need to let my light shine. Salt creates thirst. Following a meal in which we have eaten very salty meat, we find ourselves thirsty afterwards. Does our testimony for Christ in this world make people long for Christ? It should. Our lives should make them thirst for Christ. Jesus attracted sinners-those who knew they had sinned and who longed to be different. If people around us could clearly see how Christ has met our need, they would be attracted to him. They may say 'I don't understand all about it, but you've got something I need and I want it'. The very finest thing we could do for Christ would be to show to others what he has done for us. A PRAYER FOR TODAY: Lord help me to be salt today. Let others see what you have done for me. |
