THE EXPLANATION OF PENTECOST
Day 30

Bible Reading:   Acts 2:14-21

The unusual happenings of the early verses of this chapter called for some kind of an explanation. People were amazed and even criticised what was happening.

So Peter stood up to explain what had happened. 'We are not drunk. This is the work of the Holy Spirit exactly as the Old Testament prophets foretold.'

If you compare the effect of wine and the work of the Holy Spirit you will see how they are exactly the opposite in effect. Wine stimulates the natural passions, but the Holy Spirit quickens holy desires. The result of wine drinking is often weakness and shame. The work of the Spirit brings strength and joy.

Wine can make a person think he is a superman. The Spirit actually gives new power-the power of the risen Christ Wine can make a man say silly things. The Spirit takes our words and makes them powerful and effective for Christ.

Peter said God would pour out his Spirit on all the world (v. 17). The book of Acts tells how this worked out. The Spirit of God is still working today in the same way. His work in the world is one of conviction, then conversion for those who will listen to his voice.

Was that mighty fullness of the Spirit only for Pentecost, or is it still available today? Thank God the Spirit of God is still exactly the same. Where a heart is yielded to him he will fill and control that life and use it for Christ's glory. He will give power for witnessing and for overcoming temptation. When God's work is done in the power of the Spirit there is no telling where it will end. Isn't that challenging and encouraging?

A PRAYER:
Lord each day teach me how to yield to the Spirit so that he can fill me.

WHAT HAPPENED ON PENTECOST DAY?
Day 29

Bible Reading:

Can you picture the disciples as they gathered on the Day of Pentecost-a Jewish holiday? It appears from Acts 2:2 that they were still in the upper room but also they met in the Temple each day for prayer.

They may have said to each other 'Will the Holy Spirit come on this special day?' and then suddenly he came. There is much that we do not know but his coming was sudden, supernatural and surprising in its effects.

We are told of three miraculous evidences. First there was the sound of strong wind. This was one of Christ's own symbols for the Spirit (John 3). The wind speaks of the unlimited freedom of the Spirit, the force of the Spirit and the fullness of the Spirit. What can fill anything like a strong wind can?

Then there appeared something like fire. This does not seem to have ever been repeated on any other occasion yet one of the first statements of John the Baptist was that Christ would 'baptise' with fire.

Fire burns. Fire cleanses. Here is the cleansing work of the Holy Spirit whereby human vessels are made fit for service.

Then there was the ability to speak in another tongue. This was a symbol of the worldwide ministry the church would have in days to come-into all the world to every person.

Most important of all they were filled with the Spirit of God. Here was an abiding experience which had been denied to most of the Old Testament saints. What does it mean to be filled? It is to be controlled by the Spirit of God so that Christ is seen in our lives. Then he is able to do his work in us and through us.

A PRAYER:
Lord fill me, control me by your Spirit today.

THE WAITING PERIOD
Day 28

Bible Reading:   Acts 1:15-26

The disciples had returned from the Mount of Olives after witnessing one of the most remarkable happenings-the ascension of Christ. Now what should they do? Christ had given them certain instructions but does not seem to have set a date for the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Notice first of all where the disciples stayed. Christ said (v. 4) 'Don't leave Jerusalem'. Left to themselves this is what they probably would have done. Some would have gone back to their homes in Galilee. Others would have gone elsewhere.

But they obeyed Christ and stayed together in Jerusalem. This was the spiritual centre of Israel but that was not the real reason they should remain there. Christ had repeatedly told the disciples (see John 14, 15 and 16) that the Holy Spirit would come. Now Christ has told them that they must wait for the Holy Spirit's coming. Then they would have the power they needed for serving their Lord.

How did they spend the waiting time? At the beginning of the church, they spent ten days in prayer. It was waiting time but a time of expectation too. They had wonderful fellowship and as they talked together, they felt led to replace Judas. In doing this they went as far as they could, then left the final decision with the Lord.

This group of disciples became the foundation members of the church. They have left us a wonderful example of obedience, of prayer, of patience, and of willingness to walk with the Lord. Think about your church today. What kind of example are you leaving behind?

THE PURPOSE OF THE CHURCH
Day 27

Bible Reading:   Acts 1:6-11

What did Christ talk about with his disciples in the days between his resurrection and the ascension? It is very plain that he helped them understand the Old Testament better but most of all he talked to them about their future ministry.

His vision of their work of evangelising the world is mentioned in all four gospels and again here in the book of Acts. Christ did not give any detailed plan as to how to organize a church. He left that for the Holy Spirit to do. Christ simply spoke about the great task he wanted the church to devote its time and energy to-that of telling others about himself.

The church exists of course for many reasons-for worship, for fellowship, for teaching and for training. But the final result of all this should be a deep burden to do what Christ commanded us. 'You shall be witnesses unto me.' These were some of his last recorded words.

How can we do this? How did they do it? Christ told them in the same verse, 'You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you'. That is the secret. We cannot do it in our own strength. The power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us is so wonderful that he can enable us to do things that would never be possible otherwise.

Why not ask God right now, that his Holy Spirit will witness through you today? Ask God to lead someone to you who has a need. Then ask that he will enable you to tell that one about Christ.

A SONG FOR TODAY:
Lord speak to me that I may speak
In living echoes of thy tone.
As thou hast sought so let me seek
Thy erring children lost and lone.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST CHURCH LIKE?
Day 26

Bible Reading:   Acts 1:1-5

One of the most amazing books in the Bible is the book of Acts. It is hard for us to realise how remarkable the early church was because we have 2000 years of church history behind us.

The establishment of the early church was a wonderful miracle. Its leader had been publicly executed but then had risen from the dead. Now his followers were starting a new movement in the face of great opposition.

In the book of Acts we have the story of what happened. The book only covers about 30 to 35 years but there is so much packed into it. It seems as though the Holy Spirit was wanting to show what one generation could do through his power.

The book therefore has sometimes been called the 'Acts of the Holy Spirit'. It is an introduction to his work in ways unknown to Old Testament saints. As the gospels tell of Christ's earthly ministry, so the book of Acts tells of the work of the Holy Spirit.

It is also a book of personal challenge. Here we discover what happens when Christ is allowed to be the absolute head of the church and when members are open to his direction.

This book speaks about witnessing, about stewardship and about prayer. It gives us glimpses of house to house evangelism and of church administration. Here we are shown the secret of the power of that early church, the wonder of its fellowship, the solution of its problems and the spread of its message.

May God bless and challenge us as we study it together.

A PRAYER:
Lord make our church like that early church and more like what Christ wants it to be.

THE PRESENT MINISTRY OF CHRIST
Day 25

Bible Reading:   Hebrews 7:22-28

This is one of the most encouraging chapters in this book. When we first realise our position as a sinner, we realise also our need of one who can stand before God on our behalf.

Then as we go on as a Christian, we realise how much we need the continuing ministry of that same person to help us day by day. We begin to understand not only what Christ has done for us but also what he is doing for us now.

His present ministry is one of intercession for us before God's throne. Read verse 25 again. Exactly how he does this is not fully revealed but one or two other references in the Bible will help us greatly.

Turn to Luke 22:31-32. When had Christ prayed for Peter and the other disciples? Before the temptation came to them. What had he asked? That their faith might not fail. He prayed for them before the attack by Satan came.

Other references which you could study are John 17:15; 1 John 2:1 and Jude 24. Whether we know our need or not he is helping us by his intercession for us. This work will only be completed when we ourselves stand before God's throne.

Is his work silent or does he speak? We are not told. Aaron the high priest never uttered a word in the Holy of Holies. He let the blood speak for him.

Remember this work is done by one who knows our weaknesses and our temptations. Christ's work will continue as long as the need remains. Isn't that encouraging?

'Five bleeding wounds he bears received on Calvary
They pour effectual prayers and strongly plead for me.'
