Yes our reading is the same as yesterday, but today we go a step further and talk together more about Christ himself. The whole purpose of this epistle is to set forth Christ as the highest of all, so we do well to spend time on these opening verses which give us such a marvellous picture of Christ. There are seven tremendous statements about Christ in these verses: 1. He is the God-appointed heir of all things. 2. He created the worlds. 3. He shows the glory of God. 4. He is the perfect image of God. 5. He maintains all things. 6. He purifies us from our sin. 7. He has sat down at God's right hand. What does 'heir of all things' mean? God will one day bring all things under the feet of Christ. This is God's plan and in one way it will be a reward for Christ's death on the cross (Philippians 2:8-11). We, as believers, will one day share with him in all of this. Why did this wonderful person ever leave heaven and come down here? Because of his love for us and because of our need. Remember he came from heaven alone, but many have joined him there since he returned. His work was completed at Calvary and now it is a great joy to him to welcome each saved sinner into the Father's house. A QUESTION: Does my life show my thankfulness for what Christ did for me? |
