In many ways this letter to the Hebrew Christians of the first century is different from all the other epistles. It begins without telling us who wrote it. It begins with the word 'God'. We are brought face to face with him. God of course is the beginning of everything-the world, salvation and all that has ever existed. What has God done? He has spoken. We are accustomed to this fact, yet this is one of the most wonderful truths about our God. Psalm 115 describes the gods of the heathen as being unable to speak, see or hear. Our God does all that and more. He is living and he is loving. Why was it necessary for God to speak? How would we know about him if he had not spoken to us? He spoke through the prophets and then through his Son. The prophets were many, but gave only parts of God's revelation. Jesus Christ is the final, complete revelation of God. He alone was able to say 'he that has seen me has seen the Father'. God has spoken. Have you been listening to what he has been saying? He has not only spoken to the whole world, but he wants to speak to each individual heart also. Our ears and our hearts should always be open to his voice. 'I am listening Lord for thee What hast thou to say to me?' |
