Here is one of the most dramatic stories in a book filled with drama. It may have been one of the festival days of Babylon, in honor of their god Bel, after which Belshazzar was named. The huge hall of the palace has been excavated. It is over 50 metres in length. In it were gathered the leading lords of Babylon. They had come for an enormous banquet at the invitation of King Belshazzar. The Feast It was incredible that he had issued those invitations at that particular time. Over the last three months the Persian army had been besieging the city. But here were the city leaders and no doubt the army generals as well, spending the night drinking, while ignoring the danger without. The evening passed by as more and more wine was drunk. Then Belshazzar did something he might never have done had he been sober. He called for the sacred cups brought from Jerusalem so that they could drink from them. He did it to show that their gods were the greatest in the world. This was a challenge hurled in the face of the Almighty God. Belshazzar had reached the P.N.R. - the point of no return. God could not allow him to go on. God is marvellously patient but even His patience finally comes to an end. The Finger Suddenly there was a shriek. Someone saw a hand moving high up on a side wall. Someone was pointing! Now everyone saw it. What was it? Belshazzar was the most afraid of all. He knew what he had done, not merely during that night but all through his life. Now God was calling him to account. It was the Judgment Day. Like Belshazzar, every man and woman on earth, everyone who has ever lived or will live, must ultimately stand before God. Everyone has to stand there before the Almighty God, either alone or sheltered by Christ and His cross. Which way will it be for you? You alone can decide. |
