THE FINAL SCENE
Day 31

Bible Reading:   Ruth 4:9-17
THE FINAL SCENE

Ruth was at home with Naomi while her future was being decided by a man whose name we are never told. But God was in it all and it was another lesson in faith and trust that the new convert, Ruth, had to learn.

As soon as the unknown relative's decision was known Boaz spoke up. He seems to have been very happy to be able I to say to the ten witnesses and whoever else was there 'I now take Ruth to be my wife as well as buying back the land that 'I' once belonged to Elimelech, the late husband of Naomi'.

The people too were very happy about the outcome and gave Boaz all the best wishes they could possibly think of. Verse 12 seems to indicate that they even wished he might have twin sons in the days to come.

So our love story ends. Ruth would have made a radiant I bride wouldn't she? Soon a son was born and the women of the village crowded around Naomi congratulating her. They recognised the love there was between Ruth and Naomi and how God had blessed the later years of Naomi's life even more than the beginning.

Who did this baby become? The grandfather of King David. God allowed Ruth to be one of the ancestresses of his own Son who was born in the same village, the town of Bethlehem.

God can overrule in our lives and when we come to trust in him, his plans are always for our good. Boaz could not have, married Ruth while she was an unbeliever, but she came to know the God of Israel and put herself into his hands. We know the outcome of her story and her life. Some day we will fully know the outcome of our own as we put our faith and I trust in God-the same God of Boaz and Ruth.

A VERSE FOR TODAY:

'We know that all things work together for good to them that love God.' Romans 8:28.

BOAZ KEEPS HIS WORD
Day 30

Bible Reading:   Ruth 4:1-8
BOAZ KEEPS HIS WORD

The gates of a vintage or town are often mentioned in Scripture as the place where the council met or where judgments were made. Absalom played traitor to his father David in the gate of the city of Jerusalem as mentioned in 2 Samuel 15:1-4.

Boaz kept his word to Ruth, given at their midnight meeting. Early the next morning, he left everything else and went and sat in the gateway of Bethlehem, waiting for the closer relative to pass by.

As soon as the kinsman came past, Boaz called to him. He also asked for ten elders of the city to sit down with him and work out his problem on Ruth's behalf.

The interesting details are given to us in our reading, verses 3 to 7. At first the kinsman agreed to buy back Naomi's husband's land. But when Boaz told him that part of the bargain was to marry Ruth also, he said 'no' to the whole plan.

It is quite possible that he was already married or that his own land was tied up in such a way that by adding any more he would not be able to cope with all that he would then have and the whole property would suffer.

But whatever the reason, behind it all was the sovereign hand of God. He had brought Ruth from Moab to eventually be the bride of Boaz even though Boaz was much older than she was.

Here again is a lesson for us. God can guide by closed doors as well as by open doors. When he closes one, when he does not give us the first thing we ask for or when he delays his answer, it is only so that he can give us what his sovereign will has planned for us. Can we not learn this lesson again today and trust his loving hand to give us what is best in every way?

BOAZ THE GREATHEART
Day 29

Bible Reading:   Ruth 3:10-18
BOAZ THE GREATHEART

Boaz must have been a godly man. His greetings to his reapers in Ruth 2:4, and their response, together with his words to Ruth in each of these chapters give every indication of a man who lived close to God and loved his Word.

Boaz paid Ruth some beautiful compliments and agreed that he would help her as the law required. However, there was a closer relative than Boaz and he must be asked first if he would act as the kinsman-redeemer. In the meantime Ruth should lie quietly at his feet and try to sleep.

What do you think? Did she sleep with all this excitement going on? Did she think about this unknown relative who would have first choice? Did she wonder what he would be like? Did she silently pray that he might not be willing to act and thus Boaz, her friend and helper be able to marry her? What would a young woman's thoughts be during those hours from midnight to early dawn? Was her new faith able to take all of this?

Again Boaz shows his thoughtfulness and consideration. He loads her down with possibly over a bushel of grain and sends her home before anyone else was awake.

Naomi again has very sound words of advice. They can be used again and again today in many situations. 'Wait', she said, 'sit still. Take your hands off now. You have done all you can. Let's allow Boaz and the Lord to work out the next step. You can trust this man. He will do what he has promised.'

Waiting for the Lord is sometimes the hardest thing to do. It would not have been easy for Ruth and it is rarely easy for us. But it is the best advice that can be given in many situations. It is often repeated by the Psalmist-'Wait on the Lord and he will strengthen your heart'. Good advice for Ruth and good advice for us.

A VERSE FOR TODAY:

'I, waited patiently for the Lord and he inclined unto me and heard my cry.' Psalm40:1.

NAOMI'S FIRST MOVE
Day 28

Bible Reading:   Ruth 3:1-9
NAOMI'S FIRST MOVE

Naomi's love for Ruth comes through quite strongly in these verses. Her question in verse 1 reveals her strong desire that Ruth might be well cared for, particularly in the days to come when Naomi may have passed on.

Naomi therefore initiates the ancient process whereby the next of kin should provide for the widow of his brother or close relative. This law is set out in Deuteronomy 25:5-10 and in Leviticus 25:25. The relative was called a 'kinsman redeemer'. He is a beautiful picture of Christ our elder brother, coming to pay our debts and to redeem us for the inheritance God has for us.

It would be very interesting if we had a photograph of Ruth as she set out that evening .for the threshing floor of Boaz. She had bathed, put on special perfume and her prettiest dress (v. 3). Today she would have gone to the hairdresser and had her hair set as well. From all the hints given in the story, she seems to have been a beautiful girl.

Late in the evening, after the harvest celebration dinner, Boaz went to one end of a heap of grain and lay down. Ruth quietly watched from the shadows and then crept silently to his feet and quickly slipped off the cover that was over them.

Soon those cold feet woke Boaz. He sat up and immediately sensed that someone else, a woman, was lying nearby. Apparently women were never allowed at the harvest meal (v. 14).

Boaz was startled but Ruth quickly explained: 'I am here t" because I am your relative and you are my redeemer'. It all sounds strange to us but God was in it all and Boaz recognised this. Sometimes God allows strange circumstances, but he will protect his own as they walk in his way.

A PRA YER:

Lord guide me today and overrule in everything in my life, for your glory. '

NAOMI PRAISES GOD
Day 27

Bible Reading:   Ruth 2:18-23
NAOMI PRAISES GOD

Can you imagine the little stone or mud-brick home in Bethlehem when Ruth arrived home that first night? She had a full bag of grain and an exciting full story to tell. She had threshed out the grain before she left Boaz' field and had carried home almost a bushel of precious barley. Quite a load for a young woman to carry from the field to the house in the village.

Naomi was tremendously excited when she heard what Boaz had said and done. She also remembered that Boaz was a close relative and a plan began to work itself out in her mind and heart. She also began to see even dimly that God had not left her desolate but had guided Ruth's feet to that field that day.

Naomi cautioned Ruth, 'Make sure you go back to those same fields tomorrow. You may not be so fortunate if you went to someone else's harvest field. Not everyone is as kind as Boaz.'

So the days slipped by. How long did the barley harvest last? We are not told but it was followed by the wheat harvest. We know that the barley harvest began around the time of the Passover and after that the wheat harvest which was around Pentecost. About seven weeks separated these two feasts so that would be the approximate time period mentioned in verse 23.

In the meantime Ruth lived with Naomi. It would be easy to imagine that in this time, Ruth learned more and more of the worship of the true God, under whose wings she had come to trust. Naomi had obviously been growing again in her faith in God. It is interesting that while she asked the people to call her 'Mara' which means bitterness, she never seems to have been known by that name. Naomi means pleasant or happy and as she grew again in faith, that is what she became once more.

Why not sing a verse of 'To God be the glory, Great things he has done'?

奇異恩典,何等甘甜,我罪已得赦免;

如此恩典,使我敬畏,使我心得安慰;

BOAZ-THE MAN OF GOD
Day 26

Bible Reading:   Ruth 2:8-17
BOAZ-THE MAN OF GOD

Now Boaz and Ruth have met and the story begins to develop further to its climax. It is a love story with God working out the details for each partner.

Boaz could not have done more for Ruth than he did (vv. 8 and 14-16). He could easily have sent her away because she was not an Israelite. Boaz clearly recognised that although Ruth had come from Moab, she had become a true believer in Israel's God. Notice verse 12. What a beautiful phrase 'the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to seek refuge'.

Ruth recognised the goodness and overwhelming kindness of Boaz to her even though she was not an Israelite by birth (vv. 10 and 12). She was quite overcome by his kindness and even fell down at his feet in thankfulness for all he had said and done.

Boaz also told her to come and eat with the reapers at noon. He passed her a plate of roasted grain and she was offered bread and sour wine to go with it. All of this was far more than she had ever expected.

This part of the story is a wonderful illustration of God's goodness to a sinner. When we take the first step toward God by putting our faith in him, he begins to give and to give I and to give to us all that we will ever need. Our God is a giving God and he never ceases to give to his children out of his abundance of grace. When we reach heaven, we will find him still the same wonderfully gracious, generous God that we have known here.

A HYMN FOR TODAY:

'Amazing grace, how sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found,

Was blind, but now I see.

'Through many dangers, toils, and snares,

I have already come;

'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,

And grace will lead me home. '
